gnulib should compile on a C89-or-better host, yes.
In theory findutils could be using part of gnulib that coreutils is
not, which would mean that building coreutils isn't proof that the
gnulib part of findutils will build.
However, the goal is that gnulib should build on your platform,
and I assume it's some minor thing that needs to be tweaked.
