There are some relevant bug reports which relate to design features of
updatedb and to features that updatedb has just because it's a shell
script.   It's worth bearing in mind if the changes you plan will
address those problems also.

It's not that I am asking you to fix the bugs, it's that I hope we can
make the problems irrelevant by improving updatedb's design.
