Follow-up Comment #1:

This might be a limitation of the fnmatch() implementation, but even if so it
may well be possible to do better here.  The first thing we'll need is a
reproducible test case (I can probably convert that into a regression test
case).

Could you provide a short shell script which generates a file with a suitable
name and demonstrates the problem?
