I got it circumvented by changing the guard of gnulib/lib/wchar.h from "#ifndef 
 _GL_WCHAR_H" to "#if ! defined _GL_WCHAR_H || ! defined _WINT_H"

There are 3 main options:

1. Wait for a new stable release (4.4.3 or perhaps 4.6.0[*]).   I
can't predict when this will happen.
2. Use the development branch 4.5.x (you can download releases from

[*] The main blocker for a 4.6.0 release is the fact that the 4.5.x code - like 
the 4.4.x code - has a couple of bugs that need fixing:
