Don't put gawk.exe in Windows\System32 directory, that directory is
virtualized for 32-bit programs.  For details, see

To avoid all kinds of complications, keep gawk.exe in a directory
outside of the C:\Windows\ hierarchy, just put that directory on your
Path.  (I generally keep Gawk and other related programs on a
non-system drive, to avoid bumping into protected directories and the
UAC elevation prompts that are caused by that.)
