Andy, I (strongly) suggest that you simply document this is the BUGS
section of the inplace.3am manpage, and perhaps also in doc/gawktexi.in
and then leave it alone.

As far as I'm concerned the inplace extension is more a sample
than something really intended to be used in heavy duty production,
exactly for many of the reasons that have come up in this discussion
and in comp.lang.awk.

In short, we've reached the point of diminishing returns in terms of
time and effort that would need to be invested in this.

Much thanks to everyone who has contributed, and to Andy who did all
the work.
