I assume you meant the "not" I inserted above. :-)

There are .sig files associated with the tarballs on the GNU ftp site.
I don't know the appropriate PGP magic to use them, but that should give
you the same assurance you're seeking.

Well, as I'm the maintainer, I hope that I am 'reputable' enough :-)

        $ ls -l gawk-4.1.3.tar.gz 
        -rw-rw-r-- 1 arnold arnold 4407218 May 20 18:13 gawk-4.1.3.tar.gz

        $ md5sum gawk-4.1.3.tar.gz 
        55d37f4069502677f25d1340df8eec97  gawk-4.1.3.tar.gz
