Are you building from the master branch? According to git log:

    Ignore doc/*.info in .gitignore.

If that's true, then he blew away doc/gawk.info, which explains
your problem, I think. He inadvertently removed doc/gawk.info
and doc/gawkinet.info. I don't know why...
