Mr. Stewart,

Thanks for the report and the analysis.  I'm not sure that the situation
you're describing vis a vis symlinks is one that Autotools is really
designed to handle; you're best bet is to submit a bug report / question
to the automake list and see if you can get any kind of response about it.

Andy - please commit the patch to gawk-4.1-stable and merge to master.
