Using the grave accent ("backtick", U+0060) and the apostrophe (U+0027) as opening and closing quotes has a long tradition in programming, resulting from the lack of anything better in the US ASCII code and influenced by the desire to use something that doesn't require escaping between the string delimiter quotation marks (U+0022). It does look ugly - at least to me - and has certain drawbacks, but we'll have to live with it.
