It appears to be a locale issue where a collation character error is
possible, too:
$ locale -u
de_DE
$ gawk --version | head -n 1
GNU Awk 5.0.1, API: 2.0 (GNU MPFR 4.0.2, GNU MP 6.1.2)
$ gawk '/[\xC0-\xFF]/' in.txt
gawk: cmd. line:1: error: Invalid collation character: /[□-□]/
$ LC_ALL=C gawk '/[\xC0-\xFF]/' in.txt
