It took a little while, but I've now integrated these changes
into the source code and pushed to the repo. Particular thanks for
the GAWKDEBUG fixes and for the thorough code review in some of
the other parts.

For future reference, if you need to send more such reports, it'll
be helpful to send multiple emails, one per issue, instead of one
large email.  Also, please send patches as attachments.
