ioerror in token / nostringval

A dejanews search turned up several people asking this question over
the last few years, but no answers to the questions, so I'll ask again.
I don't have NNTP access at the moment, so please reply via email to

I run the Debian unstable distribution of Linux (2.4.19 kernel) and
have been using GNU gs 7.05 for quite a while now. Sometime early
last week (Nov 5th-ish), it broke. When I bring up any PostScript
file in gv -- doesn't seem to matter when/where/how it was created --
I get the following error window:

------------------------- Achilles tendon - cut here -------------------------
Unrecoverable error: ioerror in token
Operand stack:
    --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--
--nostringval-- --nostringval-- --nostringval--

Error: PostScript interpreter failed in main window.
------------------------- Achilles tendon - cut here -------------------------

If I try to print something -- even a small text file -- using lprng
and foomatic, I get a similar error in my log file:

------------------------- Achilles tendon - cut here -------------------------

I most likely updated my Debian packages one or more times between
when it last worked & when I first noticed it was broken, but it was
more than a week after that that I tracked it down this far, so I
couldn't tell you which packages might have changed. Another Linux
machine works just fine with the same files, and the gs-gnu binary
on it is identical to the broken one on my machine. I tried running
'ldd gs' and checking the libraries on both machines. Only libpdf
was different, and copying the one from the working machine to the
broken machine didn't help anything.

Any ideas what's wrong, or at the very least where to start looking?
We've been almost a week without a working printer, and my wife is
starting to get antsy.

Again, please remember to reply via email, since I don't have Usenet
access at the moment.
