configure fails on glibc-2.2.2 at lines 2054-2058 of the configure script

My system is properly equipped with all recent versions listed in the 
documentation. I had to comment-out the following lines (2054-2058) to
get the configure script to work:

#{ echo "configure: error:
#*** Some critical program is missing or too old.
#*** Check the INSTALL file for required versions." 1>&2; exit 1; }
#fi

Make proceeds normally.

I am using the glibc-linuxthreads add-on and gcc-3.0. 

Is this a bug that has been fixed in 2.2.3? Is my system misconfigured?
