Afghan killing seen as blow to Karzai... EmergencyNet News; Daily News Summary
Deadly Floods Hit Texas
Heavy floods have killed at least nine people and forced more than 4,000 others to flee their homes in much of central and southern Texas. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed or simply swept away by raging rivers swollen by nearly a week of heavy rains. Towns along the Medina River west of San Antonio and the Guadalupe River to the north and east were evacuated on Friday as the rivers rose near their record levels.
There were reports that hundreds of people, many of them children, were trapped in the town of Bandera which had been cut off by the floods. Weather forecasters are warning the worst may not be over yet. They say heavy rain is expected every day for the region until the middle of next week...
POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ: At least 31 people were injured when a deck at an oceanfront residence collapsed on Saturday night during a party. Most of the injuries involved cuts, bruises, broken bones, and injuries to the back, neck and pelvis. The 20-foot by 12-foot deck, which was 10 feet off the ground, gave way at about 2125 EDT during the Independence Day party. Officials said the age of the structure may have been a factor, though investigation of the accident continues.
CANADA: Forest fires fanned by strong winds raged in northern Quebec. Haze from the fires stretched from Michigan to Massachusetts, with thick patches covering parts of New York state. U.S. meteorologists said on Saturday that the smoke is moving at 12,000 feet above sea level and should not cause health problems. At least 50 fires, which have destroyed up to 148,200 acres of forest, were burning in a remote area near James Bay, about 500 miles north of Montreal. Fire officials said the fires have also forced the evacuation of the village of Nemaska, home to about 500 Cree Indians.
INDIA: Police said ten people, including three Indian troops, were killed on Saturday and more than 38 others were injured in a string of grenade attacks and shootings in Kashmir. In a serious four-hour shoot- out at Kokernag, 40 miles south of Srinagar, two soldiers and two Muslim rebels were killed on Saturday and another soldier was injured. Authorities identified the dead militants as members of the Pakistan-based movement Lashkar-e-Taiba...
Quote of the Day:
"We should not second-guess the people at the scene, or the way they handled it that day — they did a terrific job at the scene, and you will not find better chiefs anywhere in the country than the ones who ran things. I think we should second-guess our procedures, our policies, our history."

"Another guy on our delegation, who has spent a lot time in Iraq, brought up the fact that there would be no Palestinians problem if this had happened in other Arab countries, because they would have wiped them out in 1948, or 2000, when this Intifada started up again. All these conversations have been very disturbing for me and so what happened on our stop over today in Iblin for a couple hours just to hang out made me feel a lot better. Let me tell you what happened."

Bolivia's pro-cocaine Presidential candidate rides high in polls (July 7, 2002)
"When the US ambassador to Bolivia, Manuel Rocha, warned that Washington could cut off aid if Bolivians chose a candidate such as Mr Morales, popularity for the outsider soared. This was despite the fact that more than $100m a year goes to Bolivia in exchange for coca eradication. The diplomat was criticised for interfering with the elections, but his comments bolstered Mr Morales' standing as a radical anti-US candidate," reports Jan McGirk for the Independent UK.
Succeeding in Business (July 7, 2002)
"That's exactly what happened at Harken. A group of insiders, using money borrowed from Harken itself, paid an exorbitant price for a Harken subsidiary, Aloha Petroleum. That created a $10 million phantom profit, which hid three-quarters of the company's losses in 1989. White House aides have played down the significance of this maneuver, saying $10 million isn't much, compared with recent scandals. Indeed, it's a small fraction of the apparent profits Halliburton created through a sudden change in accounting procedures during Dick Cheney's tenure as chief executive. But for Harken's stock price -- and hence for Mr. Bush's personal wealth -- this accounting trickery made all the difference. Oh, and Harken's fake profits were several dozen times as large as the Whitewater land deal -- though only about one-seventh the cost of the Whitewater investigation," write Paul Krugman in this New ," write Paul Krugman in this New York Times commentary.
Fatal Innocence, Ours (July 7, 2002)
The White House has been hijacked. We have been terrified into supporting a war-for-profit, because, as Hermann Goering put it, 'they have told us we are being attacked.' Our economy is being bled dry, the constitution has been shredded and the only ones profiting are the Bush gang and their wealthy backers. The harsh reality is; Mr. Bush and the shadowy bunch to whom he answers, do not respect elections, do not respect Congressional oversight, do not respect constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, do not respect Democrats and do not respect Republicans. In short they operate entirely above and beyond the law.
All the President's Enrons (July 7, 2002)
"It's not that Democrats are clean. When Al Gore blasted Mr. Pitt last weekend for having led the accounting industry's drive "to open up loopholes" in the 1990's, he could have been describing his own ticket mate, Joe Lieberman, who was second to none in doing the accounting industry's bidding. But the Democrats don't have the power to undo the damage anyway. It is Mr. Bush who is C.E.O. If he doesn't bring zero tolerance of corporate cheating to his own White House, it's hard to imagine Americans rushing back into the market trusting that his administration will enforce it anywhere else," notes Frank Rich in this piece for the New York Times.
