My apologies for following up on my own message, but I managed to find
the cause for this cryptic error. It was caused by unsatisfied symbols
in one of the libraries; providing definitions for them gets us
further. (My understanding is that later versions of GLIBC have the
error message fixed to be more useful, which would indeed be nice.)
