By the same argument, we could puts lots and lots of different
classification information into the back-end database, and the
classifiers would be free to ignore this, too. The problem is that
this information shouldn't be cluttering the back-end article
repository at all; will it be remotely relevant in 5 years? 10 years?
30 years?

Yes, but it is a job for the separate classification layer run on
different servers (probably, or at least potentially), IMO.
