I would have thought that one advantage to having a
UID rather than an URL would be in mirroring the site.
This would depend on the index being on a seperate
machine to the repository (which it should in the end
IMO if the articles aren't in the database itself).
But if the repository goes down, so long as the index
has the address of another mirror, it would be easier
to find an article by its UID than by its URL. It
makes setting your mirror up slightly more flexible,
and also makes broken links an easier problem to fix.
It ALSO means to refer internally, an author/moderator
could find the UID of an article (printed clearly on
each article) and put that in, rather than an URL
which would be hidden by the cgi scripting, and which
would cause problems in mirroring again.
