The xboard manual page has a "Chess Engine" section that
discusses setting time controls.
Probably the "-tc" option is most appropriate. Just appends "-tc
500" to the command used to start xboard, to play 40 moves in
500 minutes.
At longer time controls GNU Chess 5 performs better with larger
hashsize than the default. You can pass relevant commands to GNU
Chess for these settings using the Xboard*initString resource in
.Xdefaults.
For example to increase hashsize...
XBoard*initString: new\nhashsize 1000000
Or increase hashsize and select the best line from book every
time (can make openings a bit repetitive).
XBoard*initString: new\nhashsize 1000000\nbook best
Hopefully we'll soon move hashsize, and time controls into the
Xboard GUI, I think Tim Mann may have done this on Winboard
already as he sent me a relevant patch to allocate hashsize in
MB rather than slots.
Simon, busy booking up on openings for my first big
simultaneous
