My original email had the relevant message output:

  Recent messages:
  Autosaving...error for RMAIL

This message is the only indication I have of the failure; it appears
in the minibuffer (temporarily halting all input) and is logged in the
*Messages* buffer. I have no idea what the failure itself consists
of. I get the same message for RMAIL buffers and for other narrowed
buffers, which are less common.

Grr... So far, it happens all the time for me as I'm actually doing my
work, but when I set up a clean Emacs session to reproduce the
problem, I can't reproduce it. I haven't yet been able to tell if the
-q option changes the behavior, since I can't work for very long
without the right setup, and it only seems to happen when I'm in the
middle of other things :-(. If I can find a good recipe for it, I'll
post it here.

Thanks for checking it out,
