This is because it is doing "ls --color".  Check the output of the
command "alias ls" to see what it is actually running when you do an ls.

This is not a bug in Emacs, so I have set f'ups to gnu.emacs.help.

You can either unalias the ls command on the remote system, or (assuming
you're using Emacs in some sort of windowing system where colors are
available) get ansi-color.el from:


...which will translate the ANSI codes that ls --color kicks out into
something that Emacs will display properly.
