In my site we have enhanced the compile package to run any kind of
shell command (including interactive ones).
It has a way to interact (send input to) with the compilation process.
I posted the package (ekcompl.el) to gnu-emacs-sources on 1999-07-22.

The package has been improved in non significant way since than (an
option for remote compilation was added).

The package can be got by email (gzipped, 8 bit mime compliant).
   Email to:  address@hidden
   Subject:   "files" (one word, no quotes).
   1st line of the content: "ekcompl.el.gz" (one word, no quotes).
   The file will be automaticly sent to the reply address.
