Using network-connection gives undefined variable error

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

When trying to eval (network-connection "localhost" 7) in *scratch*
one gets:
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-variable 
network-connection-service-abbrev-alist)
  network-connection-mode-setup("localhost" 7)
  network-service-connection("localhost" "7")
  network-connection("localhost" 7)

Looking at lisp/net/net-utils.el where network-connection is defined
one does not find a definition of
network-connection-service-abbrev-alist anywhere (I looked at all emacs
files).

Maybe it can be removed?
