can't customize lisp ls emulation in dired

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

When you attempt to customize using lisp ls emulation in dired,
you can change to lisp ls emulation  in the current session, but the 
customization
written out to .emacs is not effective in the next session, you do not
get the emulation,
like some setting is missing.
