Gnus/5.090008 (Oort Gnus v0.08) Emacs/21.2 (i386-pc-linux-gnu)
I see there is
C-x r r copy-rectangle-to-register
and kill-rectangle, but no plain old copy-rectangle(-as-kill).
I.e. one must modify the file one is working with, or one must specify
a register. (Goal is to yank it back later, with least aggregate fuss.)
Oh then first make the buffer read-only, then kill-rectangle, you would say.
But like sorry. Works that way, masochist flash/beep and all, with C-k,
but not C-x r r. You can yank all you want after that but there will
be nothing coming.
