Why of course, it is in ~/.emacs, not .emacs.el. Error seen upon clicking.:

emacs-version "22.1.1"

C-x g runs the command gnus-toggle
which is an interactive compiled Lisp function in `/home/jidanni/.emacs.elc'.
It is bound to C-x g.
(gnus-toggle)

Into gnus and out

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (error "Can't find library
  /home/jidanni/.emacs.el") signal(error ("Can't find library
  /home/jidanni/.emacs.el")) error("Can't find library %s"
  "/home/jidanni/.emacs.el")
  find-library-name("/home/jidanni/.emacs.el")
  find-function-search-for-symbol(gnus-toggle nil

  "/home/jidanni/.emacs.elc") apply(#[(fun file)

  find location in file"] 4] (gnus-toggle "/home/jidanni/.emacs.elc"))
  help-do-xref(89 #[(fun file) "!=!\"address@hidden'\nAb*!)" [file fun

  271582 nil 106 (70 . 1) nil (0 . 11) (8 . 16))))
  call-interactively(push-button)

You see I use
(add-hook ;A. Swann
 'emacs-lisp-mode-hook
 '(lambda ()
    (turn-on-auto-fill)
    (make-local-hook 'after-save-hook)
    (add-hook
     'after-save-hook
     '(lambda ()
        (byte-compile-file buffer-file-name)
        ) nil t)))
