BTW, if you want to avoid bootstrapping, errors like the above can
often/sometimes be solved by "trying harder".  I.e.

   make -k
where the "-k" forces "make" to keep compiling subsequent files,
which will often result in eliminating the source of the problem, so the
subsequent "make" then can finish successfully.
