Either that or have a separate command, bound to some other key, as I
expect not many modern users will miss the `l' bindings, only old
farts such as myself.

If we go with an option, you can even set it to skip intermediate
nodes by default.  I don't care, as long as I can have my bad habits
back at a price of some customization.
