For some reason, using -mm gives me a frame _with_ outer borders while
adding (fullscreen . maximized) to `initial-frame-alist' gets me a frame
_without_ outer borders. What do you get?

Indeed. That's the wording I should have used.

On the Web you can find a quite remarkable number of proposals how to
get an initially maximized frame (not only on Windows, IIUC). So I
think that we should provide a canonical solution.
