That does it:

--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
;; highlight trailing whitespaces in all modes
(setq-default show-trailing-whitespace t)

(setq org-ellipsis " \u25B7")           ; string
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
