+1 on GNU/Linux (default GTK3). This looks like GTK or X server issue, so: 0) If possible, update your X server and relevant libraries. If you're familiar with X server configuration, try to disable some features (e.g. GLX, DRI and so). 1) Can you try a different X toolkit? If possible, try to rebuild with '--with-x-toolkit=lucid' or '--with-x-toolkit=none'. 2) Can you try to run Emacs under xtruss (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/xtruss) and collect output?
