I suspect this should be fixed by having company bind non-essential and IIUC Dmitry did just that (don't know if it does/did fix the problem).
Not really fixed, no. That bug wasn't limited to idle completion, which is the only case when I'm binding `non-essential' to t, like you suggested.
And even that bug wasn't about being prompted for credentials. The difference in scenarios between that one and this one is very small: https://github.com/company-mode/company-mode/pull/487
