When I try your recipe, point jumps to the - sign and the echo area
displays -1.

I'm using
GNU Emacs 26.0.50.17 (x86_64-suse-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 3.14.15)
 of 2016-11-18
(built from commit 0d913da15c094bf596dd685acecf3438228c15cf from master)
