    (match-string NUM &optional STRING)

    [...]
    STRING should be given if the last search was by ‘string-match’ on STRING.

Try this instead:

    (let ((str (buffer-string)))
       (string-match "\\(key[ \t]*\\)= \\(.*\\)" str)
       (match-string 0 str))
