I think it is correct that it is aspell that gives trouble. 
Hunspell works. Thank you.

Not really.  Emacs invokes "aspell -a -m", not -c.  See ispell-start-process 
for the details.  What happens in that case if you send the line containing 
just "+" and a newline to the speller?

And which version of Aspell are you using?
