Aha!
(with-current-buffer (process-buffer process)
(get-buffer-process (current-buffer)))
isn't the same as process!
It's
argh- stderr<7>
vs
#<process argh-<7>>
So when you did a :stderr that pointed to process-buffer, you associated
a second process with the buffer, and that process hadn't died yet.
Without that :stderr in make-process, I see no peculiarities here.
