And it is indeed the problem.  If I remove this:

          if (EQ (prop, Qforeground_color)
              || EQ (prop, Qbackground_color))
            update_face_from_frame_parameter (f, prop, val);

Then the faces aren't destroyed...  So the bug is in
update_face_from_frame_parameter somewhere, I think.
