BTW, I just noticed that a couple of functions (commands) in dired-aux.el bind 
_user option_ `dired-isearch-filenames'.

Personally, I'm in favor of allowing code to do this, as long as its doc makes 
clear to users that this is happening.

But I thought this was a strict no-no - anathema for Emacs development.  Was 
this - as opposed to jumping through a hoop adding an additional variable - 
OK'd by the priests? ;-)
