Indeed, this will help to make the history items shorter:

  (replace-string "a" "b" nil (if (use-region-p) (region-beginning)) (if 
(use-region-p) (region-end)))
  ->
  (replace-string "a" "b" nil (use-region-beginning) (use-region-end))
