I think that's worse, in the sense that the option name gives me no good
sense what it actually does. I don't think the extra verbosity of
`matching string' over `match' is useful.
I like Paul's suggestion, although some people might think it's odd to
use the --context option for such a special case.
Personally I'd suggest a slight variation on your original --
`--match-only': the `-only' suggests that the `normal' operation is to
use a superset of the match, and the only real operation that extends
the match in this way is output; this gives me, at least, something of
an intuition for what the option does.
