Character octal 0251 is the ISO-LATIN-1 copyright symbol (a C in a
circle). Try `M-x standard-display-european' in emacs to see it as a
character (assuming your emacs is using an iso-latin-1 font).

(C) is not a legal copyright notation. You have three legal choices:
1. The word "Copyright" (as in "Copyright 2001 DJ Delorie")
2. Abbreviate it as "Copr." (as in "Copr. 2001 DJ Delorie")
3. Use the c-in-circle symbol abbreviation (as in your "\251 DJ Delorie")
Note that if you use the word "Copyright" you do not need the symbol
also - the symbol *is* the word "Copyright".
