libtool-1.4 is necessary when you use autoconf-2.50. When attempting
to use libtool-1.3.5 with autoconf-2.50, I get errors because ltconfig
attempt to read /dev/null.
Independently of autoconf issues, libtool-1.4 also makes it possible
to use shared libraries in nonstandard locations without the need to
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH. This is a major simplification in the use of shared
libraries.
