Don't use -G and -N together.
-G does true incremental backup, recording the files it dumps in a
side output file. -N is just a quick and crude manual approximation
of that (what precision is your $DAT?)
This is very much a FAQ, unfortunately IIRC the tar documentation
doesn't explain this well.
