For version parsing use the POSIX resp. C environment.  It's a good idea
to start all your sh scripts like this:

#! /bin/sh

LANGUAGE=
LC_ALL=
LC_MESSAGES=
LANG=
export LANGUAGE LC_ALL LC_MESSAGES LANG
