Yes; I typically run "make -n DESTDIR=/whatever" and do a quick glance
to make sure things appear to be going in the right place.  If not, I
rerun with "make prefix=/whatever/usr/local".  Whenever I do the latter
I'm always nervous, though :-/.

I agree with Tom; it's silly that DESTDIR is optional.  It should be
required.
