Problems with GNU Tar 1.13-9 on RH 7.2

Hi,

I'm using GNU Tar on RedHat 7.2 (Kernel 2.4.7-10).

This version of GNU tar is reporting problems when extracting files
from GNU tar archives, i.e. "Unexpected EOF on  archive file"

I've also tried GNU Tar 1.13, but get the same error message.
If I copy the archive file across to a W2K box, winzip
unpacks the file successfully

The original files from the PCs are quite big > 3GB

Any suggestions for a fix?
