This clearly indicates a problem somewhere in the NT support then.

I don't do NT development, so I'm the wrong person to ask.  You might
try contacting some of the people listed in the gawk doc and README*
files who can help you more directly.

In particular, you didn't state which version of NT you're using, which
version of gawk, nor what NT version of gawk you're using, such as cygwin,
DJGPP, natively compiled, or what.

The code in builtin.c is very straightforward, using the library's version
of system.
