StartUp Help for GNU compiling

I was looking for a free Fortran Compiler for Win98, NT,.. in the
Internet. I found a site with GNU compilers which provided
me with:

g77doc.zip ; g77exe.zip ; g77lib.zip

I unziped it with my Norton Commander and found

as.exe ar.exe cpp.exe f771.exe g77.exe ld.exe make.exe

and some stuff more.

I could start the programs but found no opportunity to use
them. I would need urgently example files.

It would be great to get some simpler Assembler, C / C++ and
Fortran examples with source code, linking example also
for DLL's and static LIB's, and make files which
can be started without any knowledge and result in well running
exe files. They should demonstrate all fundamental concepts
and syntaxes which must be known for using GNU compiling.

I work with the commercial Absoft Fortran/C++ Compiler, TASM
and freeware NASM. Like your programs I loaded NASM from
the web. I had no problems getting started with NASM and it
works harmonical beside TASM. And the commercial software
ships with startup examples well working.

But I see no chance to come familiar to GNU compilers.

I am interested in the GNU tools. I thought, they are only for Linux.
Because I am still only Windows user, I thought GNU is nothing
for me. But I work successfull with LaTeX under Windows.

I think LaTeX is similar like GNU. Donald Knuth was professor
with good income. So TeX becomes academic freeware. Similar
I think GNU compilers are made in universities as free project
and then given to public domain like LaTeX. Is this true ?

Please give me some help.

Sincerely: Wolfgang Renner
