What do you mean with "large-file mode"?
It seams like it is the default, but I tried it with the "./configure
--enable-largefile" option as well.
In any case it works from the command-line, but not in the background.

Are you sure that you compiled GNU tar in large-file mode?  That is most
likely the problem.
