In other words, we can have --eol=auto option, but POSIXLY_CORRECT
has to imply --eol=lf.
But I tend to think that the practical value of the autodetection
is so high in today's heterogenous world, that it's worth it to make
the default different from POSIX.
(Eli has presented a very strong arguments in his mails.)
Of course, this feature will not appear in the next bug fix release,
it will appear in a "development" release, so that it can be tested
thoroughly.
